Myopia Management for Children in Reno, NV

Nearsightedness Is More Than Blurry Vision

If your child is becoming more nearsighted each year, it’s natural to wonder what that means for their long-term vision. Myopia, or nearsightedness, doesn’t just affect how clearly your child can see; it can lead to vision loss in adulthood. In fact, myopia is becoming more common worldwide, with projections suggesting that nearly half of the global population may be myopic by 2050.

Visionary Eye Center's approach to myopia management focuses on understanding how your child’s vision is changing and taking steps to slow that progression. By combining what you’re noticing at home with detailed testing, our Reno eye doctor can create a plan aimed at protecting your child’s vision now and in the future.

The earlier we understand myopia, the better we can manage it

Why Early Myopia Management is Crucial

As myopia progresses, it can increase the risk of eye health conditions later in life. Higher levels of myopia are associated with a greater chance of developing problems such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

By starting myopia management early, we can help slow progression and reduce the long-term impact on your child’s vision. This proactive approach allows us to focus not just on helping your child see clearly today, but on protecting their future eye health.

How Myopia Management Works

Myopia develops when the eye grows longer than it should, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. While glasses and contact lenses can correct vision, they do not slow this growth.

Myopia management focuses on controlling how quickly the eye changes. By using specific treatments designed to influence how light enters the eye and how the eye grows, we can help reduce the rate of progression and support better outcomes.

As one of the few eye clinics in Reno that can directly measure the length of the eye, we can detect changes before they show up in your child's prescription, helping to manage your child's condition more effectively.

Our Myopia Treatment Options

Visionary Eye Center offers several options for myopia management, each designed to address your child’s needs based on their age, lifestyle, and rate of progression.

Ortho-K Lenses

Your child wears orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses overnight to reshape the surface of the eye while they sleep. This allows them to see clearly during the day without glasses or contact lenses. But that's not all. Studies have also shown that ortho-k slows the progression of myopia.

MiSight® 1-day lenses

MiSight® lenses are daily disposable contact lenses designed for myopia management in children. They are worn during the day and provide clear vision while helping slow the progression of nearsightedness, making them an effective long-term option for children with consistent daily use habits.

atropine eye drops

Low-dose atropine eye drops are used at night to help slow the progression of myopia. This treatment works by influencing how the eye grows over time and is often well-tolerated by children. Atropine may be used on its own or combined with other treatment options.

Stellest® lenses

Using a specialized optical design, Stellest® lenses correct vision and change how light is focused across the retina. By influencing how light is distributed, Stellest® lenses can reduce the signals that contribute to worsening nearsightedness over time.

Choosing the Right Approach for Your Child

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for myopia management. The right approach depends on several factors, including your child’s age, how quickly their prescription is changing, and their daily activities.

We take the time to review your child’s results with you and explain your options, so you can feel confident in moving forward. As your child grows, we continue to monitor their vision and adjust treatment as needed.
